    • CONCERNING .PEOPLE.
Mr. John Fox Mellor died at Holmfirth, Fulham, on Sunday, in his sixty-ninth year. He was a son of the late Mr. Joseph Mellor, and was born in Adelaide on February 22. 1845. His father established the agricultural implement works, now known, as Mellor Brothers, Franklin street, and the eon leajned tie trade of an ironmoulder, but retired from it to go on he land. He secured a property at tie Reedbeds, where he lived for 41 years. The deceased always took great interest, in educational work, and for 31 years he had been a member, and latterily Chairman, of the Thebarton School Board of Advice. Every Christmas he and Mrs. Mellor gave prizes to the children, and in recognition of his kindly work on their behalf the extensive grounds of the Thebarton,School were named 'The Mellor Playgrounds.' Mrs Mellor was a prime mover for the establishment of a local branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and had been on tts committee ever since its foundation. He belonged to the Royal Agricultaral and Horticultural Society for a long period, and did splendid work on its poultry committee, and also for the Poultry and Dog Society. During nearly the whole-  history of the Home for Incurables at Fullarton Mr. Mellor had been associated/with that beneficent institution, and was a member of its general and house committees. He was a. member of the Field Naturalists' Society, on account of his own interest iu Nature study, and also because he wished to advance a love for science among the. young; but he took no active part in the deliberations of that body. In the early days of the State he was prominently connected with several musical organizations, and participated in all the oratorios and festivals arranged by the Adelaide Philharmonic Society. When Mr. W. H. Jude, the eminent English organist, came to Adelaide, Mr. Mellor assisted him in his aim to uplift the masses by the aid of music, and was a pioneer in the formation of the Jude Benevolent Search Party, to give succour to the needy. For years he was honorary'organist to several churches in succession, among them the Flinders Stieet Baptist Church. His creed was broader than the measure of any single denomination, .and at Henley Beach ue worshipped and worked alike in the loca Methodist, Baptist, Congregational, and Church of Christ activities. He was associated with many philanthropic agencies, and was keenly interested in athletic and other societies to help the young men of his neighbourhood. Mr. Mellor waa one of the oldest members of the Y.M.C.A., and a veteran member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. In the early days he was connected with the artillery, when the. guns were drawn by manual labour, and so soon as horses were supplied he was promoted to the position of driver. A thorough Liberal in politics, he was ever zealous for the good Government of the community, and was a member of the Henley Beach branch of the Liberal Union. The deceased marrieda daughter of the late Mr. John White, a pioneer colonist,, who was present at the proclamation of the province m 1836. His widow survives him, and there are four sons  Mr. J. W. Mellor, the well-known ornithologist and naturalist .(Adelaide), Mr. S. C. Mellor (Fulham), Mr. P. W. Mellor (Albert Hills), and Mr. C. W. Mellor (Wellington, N.Z.), and two daughters, Mrs. E. B. Nicholls (Melbourne), and Miss W. M. Mellor (Fulham). Two brothers survive, Mr. J. F. Mellor (North Adelaide), and Mr. B. F. Mellor (Moonee Ponds).

    • One of the oldest residents of the Reed beds, Mrs. Mellor, widow of Mr. John F. Mellor, died at her residence, "Holmfirth," Fulham, on Tuesday, in her 73rd   year. Mrs. Mellor was born at the Reed beds on January 1, 1847, and was the only daughter of the late Mr. John White, of the Reedbeds who arrived here in the ship Tam o' Shanter in 1836, and was present at the proclamation of the province. Mr. White took up land at the Reedbeds, adjoining that of the late Mr. W. H. Gray, and Mrs. Mellor lived her long and useful life within a stone throw of her old home. She was best known amongst naturalists, for she was an ardent lover of Nature, and her property was a sanctuary for birds of all descriptions. She was an active member of the field naturalists' section of the Royal Society for about 35 years, and had been on the committee for a long time. She was a foundation member of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union, which is now in session in Queens- land, and regularly attended the annual congresses of this body in the various states. In addition to her other accom-

plishments, she was a skilled artist. Dur- ing the war she spent much of her time in knitting socks for soldiers. Mrs. Mellor  was of a philanthropic nature, and gave freely to the poor and needy. She was in- strumental in forming the Jude Benevolent Search Party, to commemorate and carry on the good work of Mr. W. H. Jude, the well-known musician, who was in Adelaide many years ago. In this society she worked hard and long in making clothing and collecting money for the poor. She took an interest in every progressive movement in her district, and drove the first pile pf the Henley Beach jetty. She was married in 1868 to Mr. Mellor, who died six years ago. The familjy now living are Mr. J.   W. Mellor, Lockley, Messrs. P. W. Mellor, and S. C. Mellor, Fulham, Mr. C. W. Mellor, of Wellington, New Zealand, and Mrs. Brooke Nicholls, Melbourne. There are also four grandchildren.
