Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hooper, well-known and highly esteemed residents of Rose Park, celebrated their golden wedding on Monday. Mr. Hooper, who was born at Strathalbyn in 1854, was among the first settlers in that district, and took an active interest in the affairs of the town. Mrs. Hooper, who is a daughter of the late Mr. W. C. Stephens, of Strathalbyn, was only eight years of age when she came out from Devonshire with her parents. Her marriage took place at Strathalbyn. In 1880 her husband took up land in the district of Coglin, near Peterborough. The country was then dense scrub. Mr. and Mrs. Hooper know much of the hardships of pioneer farming, with dry seasons, low prices, and primitive methods. But Mr. and Mrs. Hooper, with characteristic courage, held out, and after 38 years of varied experiences were able to retire. They settled at Rose Park about nine years ago. During his residence in the north Mr. Hooper was a member of the Coglin District Council. He is a Freemason, and joined the Strathalbyn Lodge more than 50 years ago. He can also claim membership with the Oddfellows for more than half a century. A happy gathering took place at their home in Grant avenue, Rose Park, when the members of the family met and honoured their parents. The surviving members of the family are -Messrs Herbert Richard (Dulwich), Jack (Hallett), and Howard Hooper (Peterborough), Mrs. E. R. Turner (Caltowie), and Mrs. H. Thyer (Dawson). There are also 19 grandchildren living. Since his residence at Rose Park Mr. Hooper has taken up the game of bowls and until an illness incapacitated him recently, he was an A grade player of the Parkside Club. Mr. and Mrs. Hooper were the recipients of many congratulations from residents of Rose Park.
