    • OBITUARY
      Mrs. Mary Goodhart
Mrs. Mary Goodhart, who died on Saturday, was born in Adelaide on Au- gust 20. 1841. Her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Turner, arrived by the
Fernleigh with her uncle. Mr. Joseph Mellor and his four sisters. With her father, who was a brewer, she lived in many different places. One of her most vivid recollections was a journey to Mount Barker by bullock dray.which     took two days. Her father had bought land in the vicinity, and later was em- ployed at the Oakbank brewery by Mr. Gray. She then lived at Blakiston and attended the church and Sunday school there under Mr. and Mrs. Fulford, of whom she always retained the kindliest memories. She lived for some years in Port Adelaide with an aunt, Mrs. Malin (later Mrs. Lavin) and in Kapunda with a cousin, Mrs. Garsed. When still in  her teens she married Mr. George William Goodhart. who was employed by the Bank of Australasia, and when he was appointed manager at Kooringa she accompanied him with her two small children, travelling by train to Kapunda and thence by Cobb & Co's coach. In 1876 Mr. Goodhart was trans-ferred to Port Lincoln, where he died; in 1887. Since then Mrs. Goodhart has lived at Semaphore, Woodville and   Park terrace, Gilberton. On one occasion Miss Lawson, matron of the Walkerville Boys' Home, appealed to her for help, the boys being sadly short of clothing. Mrs. Goodhart interviewed the late Mr. James Marshall, and obtained a concession on the price of a roll of cloth. She then set to work with scissors and machine, and did not rest until she had made a most needed garment for each of the 70 boys. Mrs. Good-hart led an active life until about 15 years ago, when she was stricken with an attack of acute neuritis, which lasted many months, and left her crippled. She passed her days in a wheeled chair in the the open air. and though sight and hearing failed, her intellect remained clear. She died after a short illness. She leaves a brother. Mr. John Turner, of Largs. a daughter. Miss Goodhart, and three sons. Messrs. W. W., Alec, and G. F. Goodhart.

  • Notes
    • From Violet Turner 1967 p3-4
John Thomas, born 1850, the first son of Joshua and Nancy had the responsibility of helping to support the family. At the age of fifteen he went three nights a week to the vegetable market in Adelaide, taking his two young brothers with him. They drove from Port Adelaide along the Port Road which had no light all the way except the small lantern held by Ben. while John drove and little Will (my father) kept a watch for prowlers along the way. The road at Hindmarsh used to become a morass in wet weather and sometimes the three boys had to walk, leading the horse. Arrived at the market, John bought the vegetables to stock their little shop, while his brothers crouched down wherever they could and went to sleep. Then, in the early morning., they drove back to Port Adelaide where John sold his vegetables while Ben and Will went to school. Three nights a week. What a child-hood! But John learnt to be a good businessman and soon he and his brother Will became the sole greengrocer in all the district. John's business was among the ships moored in the river. Often he made ten pounds profit before breakfast.

John went to see his sister Bessie at Mount Pleasant, Ballarat, and there was introduced to Kate White. born 1854. They were married in the Towaninnie Methodist Church (Victoria) on 25th June 1884, and John took his bride back to Port Adelaide.   There were eight children, but only three survived infancy. After some years, John sold the Port Adelaide business and bought an orchard at Tea Tree Gully, where they lived until he retired and settled at Largs Bay (Anthony St.). He died in 1941 at the age of 91 and settled down at Largs.

Their children were Alice Muriel, born (17 Aug) 1889, Edith Kate (Haines) (1891), John Wilfrid (1893). Alice did not marry. She took part in many Church and philanthropic activities until her health gave way, and is now living quietly at Parkside.

Kate, the widow of John Turner died at Mount Lofty in 1942 at the age of 88.
