    • Death of Mr Nicholas Waters
Mr Nicholas Waters whose demise was not unexpected, passed away in his own horne, in the presence of his wife, Dr Miller, Mrs Noonan and the Rev, I. L. Skelton on Saturday night, at 12 o'clock, He had been ailing for some time and his strength gradually diminished until he became bed-ridden a month or so ago. In the past few days he recovered sufficiently to move
about, but his medical adviser knew that the end was near and warned his friends who were prepared for the sad event. The funeral cortege representative of every section of the community including the Masonic Order of which he was a prominent member, left the house at three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, and numbers joined in the solemn procession on the way to the General Cemetery where the remains were interred. Every motor car in the town had been requisitioned to convey mourners to the graveside, and those unable to secure transport
in this way walked the long distance in a spirit of profound  respect.
The deceased, who was 69 years of age arrived in the Territory by the s s. Katterthun in 1882, and the police service claimed his attention from that time until a few months ago, when be took his last leave prior to retirement, He joined the South Australian force in 1873, and secured a transfer to the Territory nine years later. On his arrival he ranked as a first class constable, and did a term of service extending over 16 months in Darwin,
and put in a further period of a year at Yam Creek where he had charge of the station, until the close of 1884.
From there he returned to Darwin, and rose in the service until he became Sub-Inspector in July 1904, and an Inspector in 1910. In-this position he was actively engaged for over l8
years, and he leaves behind an unblemished record of integrity, good citizenship, and work well done. In his 42 years service he left the Territory only four times ; once he went to Hong Kong and on the other occasions visited the southern states, where on
his first trip he married the lady who survives him, as his nearest relative.
In addition to his regular duties, the late Inspector assisted on the Tender Board of which he was a member, and attended the work connected with half a dozen minor offices. He was for
some time a Government nominee in the local Town Council, and took an active interest in public affairs, as well as those that tended to lighten the load of personal misfortune. Under a somewhat stern official exterior he hid a big generous heart, and there are scores of old hands who will miss
his advice and assistance. The funeral arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr Albert Woods, and those  who paid the last tribute of respect to his memory at the graveside were His
Honor Mr Justice Roberts, Colonel Story representing the Government, Messrs Millican, Grant, Loftes, Uren,
Stewart, Frost, Curtis, Cummings, and others of the Masonic Lodge, the Editors of both local newspapers, Acting Inspector Burt and Mounted Constables Cameron, Pollard, Lynch,
and Green, Captain Lawson, Tindill, Conigrave, MacDonald, Ward, Gurry, Osborne, Goodman, Doran, McKeddie, Hawke, Lampe, Chambers, Chaseling, Neate, Nylander, F E Holmes, Pike, Gorman, Cook, Green, E J Foster, Young, Acting Chief Warden Norman Bell, Hames,' Wedd, Seale, Snell, A Stokes, J R Davis, Partridge, Finnis, Watts, Marchant, Potts, Cant, Jack
Clancy, J Palmer, J.P., McKinuon, Joe Roberts, the Chinese merchants including Wing Cheong Sing, Man Pong Lau, Wing Wah Loong, Toey Sing Loong, Fang Chong Loong, Geo Fong Ming, Yuen See Kee, Yam Yan, and a large number of others. Floral tributes were sent by a host of sympathisers. The Anglican Rector the Rev. I. L. Skelton read the burial service.
