      ALLEGED BREAKING AND ENTERING.

The hearing of the charge of breaking and entering the premises of R. Sampson, and stealing therefrom certain money and cheques made against J. F. Johnson, com-positor, was continued at the City Police Court yesterday. Inspector Farley con-ducted the prosecution. Accused was defended by Mr. Browne.

Margaret Turner said that on the 15th ult. accused came into her father's shop in the evening. He wanted some groceries, and asked if witness could cash a cheque which he showed to her. The cheque was drawn by D. and W. Murray for £2 Witness took it to her father, who returned with it to the shop, where he asked accused if he was working at D. and W. Murray's. Accused said " Yes." He was in the pack- ing-room. He said he was too late to cash the cheque at the bank. Her father called attention to the fact that the cheque was dated the 10th, and asked why it could not be cashed before. Accused said that the firm wrote out the cheques at the beginning of the week and paid the men on Saturdays. Her father then supplied accused with some groceries and asked accused to endorse the cheque. Accused endorsed it "J. C Jackson." The second endorsement was in her father's hand-writing. Witness fully identified accused as the person who brought the cheque to he  father's shop. By Mr. Browne : Wit-ness had identified accused on a previous occasion. He with others came out of the police van. Detective Connell told witness to come round to the back of the Town Hall.

Benjamin Turner, father of the last wit-ness, gave corroborative evidence.

Detective Condon said that the cheque produced having been handed to him, he submitted it, with a signature by accusd attached to a Police Department voucher, to an expert in handwriting. Witness de-posed to arresting accused.

Douglas St. G. Rich said that he com-pared the signatures produced. In his
opinion they were in one and the same handwriting.

Accused, by his counsel, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £15 each  and accused in .£30.

Benjamin. Born 19 Feb 1853 who had accompanied his brothers John and William on those perilous night journeys up the Port Road to the Adelaide market. It was Ben's duty to keep a watch out for undesirables along the road, and on at least one occasion. when a man tried to molest the young driver, Ben wielded his whip so soundly that the maurauder beat a retreat, nursing his wounded face. On May 24th, 1875, Ben married Isabella Strang, born May 19th, 1857.

Their children were: Margaret (born 13 June 1876), Alfred john (11 Apr 1873) Ethel Isabella (18 Jan 1880) Florence Maud (1882) and Harold Herbert (1884). The family went to Broken Hill, where Ben kept a store. In 1893. Isabella loved wife and mother died in Broken Hill. Ethel, only thirteen at the time, left school and became housekeeper for the family. Maggie, only four years older, was helping her father in the store. In 1897, Ben took his family to Western Australia. There is a funny little shop in Perth where they lived for a time before going to an orchard in Bulls Brook where many years were spent. They were a musical family. Maggie or Ethel at the piano, and the rest with various string instruments. most evenings were filled with melody. Florrie is the only one now living of Ben's family. She is now living in a Home for the Aged near Fremantle. She is Mrs. 0'Keefe. Alf's family are: Jack (Perth), Lionel Ph. D. (America), Dorothy (Melbourne) and Margaret (Perth).
