THERE are few things m this grey old world that- riches cannot purchase or influence obtain, but one is that indefinable thing known . as personality. It is a gift reserved for the few, but one fortunate man who has it m full measure is . Harold Livingstone Tapley, Dunedin's Mayor and M.P. It is over 50 years since his first baby whimperings disturbed the Tapley household m Semaphore, South Australia, but m 1893 he came across to Dunedin, and the settlement of Scotsmen appealed to him so much that he decided to tempt Fortune there. After learning all there is to be learned about shipping and insurance he Vhad his nam > • plate hung on the door of his own ' office m 1900, and from that time he has trodden the paths of prosperity as the heart or a flourishing shi ppin g, stevedoring, and insurance business. Though Dunedin ?? is but his adopted

? home, H.L.T. thinks it is the gem of the universe, and few 'have given more time to the southern city's advancement than he has. Away back m 1907 he first wooed and won public favor for a seat on '? the City Council, and at times during the lohg'years between then and now I ho has figured m the deliberations of the Harbor Board, the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and the High School board of governors, i In 1923 he won the right to sit m the mayoral chair, and so well did he fill the job that when he faced the barrier m the succeeding contest, none Of the prospective starters took him on, and he had a walk-over. • But higher honors were ahead of him, for at the Parliamentary election of last year he successfully' carried- the standard of the Reform Party m > the race for. Dunedin North, heading off the sitting Labor member,, Jim Munro. • ? . i When-'the project of holding the Exhibition was first mooted there was no greater driving force behind it than H.L.T., and as a director of the big show he is naturally elated over the success that is attending it.; He is jusf plain .Harold Livingstone Tapley, M.P., at present, but it won't be at all surprising if he has a string of letters tacked on to his name some day. v Vice: Putting two days' work into one. Hobby: Speaking on Imperialism.
